NJ TRANSIT Assistant Signal Maintainer in Newark, New Jersey

Summary:The Assistant Signal Maintainer position is an entry-level position within the Engineering Department - Signal at New Jersey Transit Rail Operations. Signal Maintainers are responsible for the installation, testing, and maintenance of all equipment associated with railroad signaling (including but not limited to highway grade crossings, electrical/mechanical switches and railway traffic control signals). This position requires work to be performed outdoors, in all types of weather conditions, at various work locations throughout New Jersey TRANSIT’s network of 11 passenger rail lines.Employees are subject to a (90) ninety-day probationary period. Upon and during successful completion of the probationary period, Assistant Signalmen will be enrolled into New Jersey TRANSIT’s Signal Training program and are contractually obligated to pass (8) company-sponsored training modules within a (2) two-year period in order to be promoted to the position of Signal Maintainer and maintain permanent employment with NJ TRANSIT.Roles and Responsibilities:Assist fellow Signal Department employees in all manners of work involving the installation, testing, and maintenance of all forms of signal apparatus and functions.Excavate railroad right-of-ways for cable/conduit installationsCut tree limbs and brush overgrowth interfering with signal systemsClimb stairwells and ladders (with fall prevention equipment) to perform work.Walk over and working on top on fixed overhead fixed and movable railroad bridges.Clean and paint exterior/interior signal equipment housing.Transport employees, supplies, and equipment to various locations throughout New Jersey with company vehicles.Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures following routine and all standards of performance. Maintain a safe working environment.Education, Experience, and Qualifications: Be able to pass NJ TRANSIT’s Signal Maintainer Aptitude TestHave basic knowledge of electricity: series and parallel circuits, Ohm’s Law, resistance, etc.Have basic knowledge of electronics: diodes, capacitors, rectifiers, circuit boards, etc.Possess the ability to be able to learn and use various types of electrical measuring instruments.Successfully pass background, drug screening, and physicalBe able to work various shifts, holidays, and weekendsHave a Valid Driver’s LicenseHave a High School Diploma or GEDPhysical Demands: Perform various types of physical labor duties like digging, lifting, and climbingPossess a physical ability to use various types of hand and power toolsBe exposed to equipment that intensifies the heat factor on an occasional basisWear protective equipment such as hardhat, safety glasses, and safety-toe bootsPerform heavy lifting and carrying tasks with the weight of up to (50) fifty poundsApply pushing and pulling force of (60) sixty pounds pressure during manual cranking operation of railroad switchesWork outdoors in all types of weather conditions, including in confined spaces and at variousAt NJ TRANSIT, diversity and inclusivity are vital to our success as are committed to hiring individuals from diverse backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and veteran status.
